I really enjoyed reading this, Nzinga! And I have so much to say I feel like I’ll forget a lot 😭

It’s so sad to see gentrification taking over cities across the globe and how indigenes are left homeless and worse off than when their cities were “underdeveloped.”

You make me want to attend an Abidjan book fair now. I like that you included a story of when you attended your first book fair as a kid, it was so cute. I loved your review and liked reading your thoughts on the books, the music, the publishers. And I find the Adora collection intriguing. This is the first I’m hearing of it.

On the topic of some Ivorian books having ugly covers and being didactic, I get you!

I’m grateful for the growth of Nigerian literature but I can’t forget the books I read as a child that constantly shamed and punished women whose actions diverged from what society required of them.

You’re an amazing writer and I hope to keep reading your work. I hope your book is coming along well and that you’re resting and taking care of yourself <3

I truly enjoyed reading this…there’s so much to feast on.

Walter Rodney was from my country, Guyana.

The people of Guyana were once a book-loving nation; now, you won’t find many reading, it’s sad. Your country produces sooo many books, I was reading your essay with awe.

Oh You're from Guyana ? that's amazing, I love when my writing connects me with my siblings from accross the Atlantic. And yes, Côte d'ivoire does produce lots of books even though only half of the population is litterate. I'm trying to read more ivorian books because i realized most african books I read are nigerians😅 In Africa, it's Nigeria that really get the writing nobel prize in my opinion but since i'm writer I decided to write the type of ivorian book I'd like to read.

It does seem as if Nigeria produces the winners, doesn’t it? Writers, musicians. At uni we read Achebe and Soyinka. I know that citizens in other African countries have big talent, we just don’t hear about them, which is sad. Now, I’m curious about books from your country. When your book is out, please remember to tell me!!

Guyana is made up of various groups of people, I think we all got mixed up along the way - we’re from Africa (I don’t know which countries), India, China, Portugal, the Middle East & the UK…and the Amerindians, the indigenous people who were there long before Guyana was (ahem) “discovered”. Most of my ancestors came from India. I think there’s North Africa somewhere in the mix.

Walter Rodney is a hero.
